Scholarship Awards Ceremony December 2011

"Presenting a scholarship isn’t just about handing over a cheque, it’s about rewarding excellence, recognising talent or increasing a student’s chances of success."

Students, scholars, donors, teachers and friends joined together to celebrate the annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony held at the University’s Hendon campus.

Event host, Deputy Vice Chancellor Melvyn Keen, said: “It is important that we never lose sight of the huge contribution that universities and their talented graduates make to society. There has been much talk about how Universities across the country should up their game and attract people from many different backgrounds, but I’m proud to say that Middlesex already has a great record for welcoming students who may not have come from wealthy backgrounds or a long family history of attending university. Talent and potential have always been our most important entry requirements. Because our job is to give our students the best chance of success.....to unlock this potential.”

Over 120 students were presented with scholarships such as the Santander Academic Excellence scholarship, designed to reward students with excellent grades and the Conygar Investments scholarships and the Rise-Up scholarships provide financial help to people who are the first in their family to get into university or who have succeeded against the odds.

Melvyn Keen went on to say “Presenting a scholarship isn’t just about handing over a cheque, it’s about rewarding excellence, recognising talent or increasing a student’s chances of success. Alongside the vital scholarship funding direct from the University we are very lucky to have some generous and committed partners, friends and alumni who share our view that helping the next generation of students to succeed brings great rewards. It’s a fantastic feeling for our donors to know they are playing their part in nurturing talent that will go on to make a major contribution to communities and industries.” Melvyn Keen thanked the alumni, friends and partner organisations whose generosity made these scholarships a reality. “Your support will start something that goes far beyond a financial legacy, launching the careers and lives that will positively affect others for many years to come.”
